Replacement of an existing linear accelerator within an active, licensed healthcare facility, representing the first of three treatment vaults planned for modernization. Project included vault renovations, installation and coordination of new radiation oncology equipment, infrastructure upgrades, and a new patient-focused visual and audio experience designed to improve comfort throughout treatment.

The Challenge
Replacement of the first of three linear accelerators required construction within an active, licensed healthcare facility while maintaining ongoing radiation oncology services. During planning, the existing chiller system supporting all three treatment vaults was identified for replacement and upsizing to accommodate the upgraded equipment. Because the system served active treatment spaces, the transition had to be carefully executed without disrupting scheduled patient care.

Our Approach
Toltec Group developed a coordinated phasing and shutdown plan with facility operations, clinical teams, contractors, and equipment vendors. The new chiller was installed and prepared for operation in advance of the final transition, allowing the team to carefully sequence the shutdown of the existing equipment, complete system connections, perform startup and commissioning, and return the system to service within the planned operational window. Construction of the LINAC vault was similarly coordinated around active patient care and included infrastructure upgrades and a new patient visual and audio experience.
The Outcome
The new chiller system was successfully installed, connected, and commissioned while maintaining continuity of radiation oncology operations. The first LINAC vault was completed as part of the facility's three-vault modernization program, delivering upgraded treatment technology, supporting infrastructure, and an enhanced patient experience without unplanned disruption to patient care.
Key Takeaway
Detailed phasing and close coordination with clinical and facility teams allowed critical infrastructure to be replaced while protecting patient care and maintaining operations in an active healthcare environment.
